Nicole's Poetic Words
A couple of years ago, I began writing abook of poetry and I realized I don't have much experience in the poetry world, and I won't likely be published. I didn't know how or when I would get any experience. But when I least expected it, Mrs. Coyne asked me to read my poem atMiles for Melanoma. I was so excited, and my bottom line is, good things happen when we least expect it. But unfortunately, so does Melanoma. Instead of ignoring this, I hope that everyone will be aware.
A Poem from the Sun
Every morning, I wake up so early in the day,
And give you the light so your children can play.
When it's time to sleep in the late afternoon,
I say my goodbyes, and leave you with the moon.
Although the stars are beautiful, they can't replace me.
So I come back soon and give you light to see.
But when you take advantage, and tan in my rays,
You are hurting yourselves in so many ways.
You wouldn't worry about darkening your skin
If you'd realize that real beauty lies within.
I'll tell you a story about a young dancer
Unfortunately to be diagnosed with skin cancer.
She never knew that my power was so great
Until it was decided that she'd have this awful fate.
All she wanted was beauty visible to the eye
She never thought this "Beauty" might cause her to die.
She begged the doctor for one last chance
To put on her shoes and have one last dance
But the doctor shook his head, "It's not up to me."
And all that's left of this dancer is her story
How just because she wanted to tan
She never lived to dance again.
I hope one day the world will learn
To use me for light and heat, but never to burn.
